This equipment is majorly used for measuring short straight distances Usually with a pointed tip on the bottom, that is suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference line, or  plumb-line. It is essentially the vertical equivalent of a "level†. This equipment was used to accurately locate vertical orientation. As can be seen from the picture, finishing nail is a slender nail having a narrow head being able to be driven easily into the wood surface. It then leaves a small hole that can be filled with putty and smaller compound. It is normally used in marking the various short distances that have been measured in order to ensure there is straightness of the tape. 7) A member of our team stood from a distance to observe if the tape was sagging to make sure the measurement was accurate. A plumb bob was held over point A. we then measured the distance between points AE prime and E and then added the two measurements taken. Different segments had different measurement values. Trial 1 to 3 the values are almost close but not exact. The values of the horizontal distances with no breaks also varied with those when using breaking tape. Some errors were encountered when carrying out the experiment; the errors could have been due to improper reading of the tape or using the equipment. The variation of the end graduations between the horizontal distances was due to the effect of temperature and the weight of the tape. The error could have been reduced by applying greater tension to the tape, personal errors could have been reduced by avoiding parallax when reading the

Snap on Tools Intranet Case Study :: GCSE Business Marketing Coursework

Case Study Snap on Tools Intranet Snap-On is one of many companies that have embraced the Internet as a tool for management. Snap-On runs its own intranet for the exclusive use of Snap-On franchises and dealers. (Senn, 1998) Snap-On’s intranet provides reams of valuable information that would be inconvenient to deliver any other way. The speed of change in today’s market has forced printed material into partial obsolescence. Before Snap-On developed its own intranet, merchandise catalogs and part listings would have to be in printed, bound matter. Anyone who has been to an auto parts store can vouch that each of those catalogs is huge, to say the least. A franchisee would have to carry several catalogs in his vehicle for reference purposes. These catalogs occupied space in the truck that could have been used for inventory, and searching through them would eat into valuable time. Additionally, Snap-On would have to reissue the catalogs or send appendices when there was a change in any of the information. With an intranet, Snap-On merely changes the information on their websites, and the new information is there when the franchisees access it. This means no more expensive mailing of h eavy catalogs and no more wasted time spent flipping through the pages of a book, trying to find the entry he wants, only to find out after fifteen agonizing minutes that the page he needs has been ripped out. (Senn, 1998) Were I a Snap-On franchisee, I would be enthused about the use of a company intranet for the delivery of sales- and product-related information. Timely information is vital to survival in business today. Snap-On’s intranet allows for speedy updates of information. This means I would not have to wait the six to eight weeks for an updated merchandise list, nor would I have to pay exorbitant sums to get the package express-mailed to me. All my questions could be answered almost immediately via research on the different pages, or through email. (Senn, 1998) Snap-On was motivated by the many benefits of the Internet to use the intranet as a tool in developing a communications link to each dealer. Franchisees in far-flung places could easily be contacted and organized. Orders and inventories can be monitored from one location, decreasing the number of personnel and middle management. This flatter organizational structure provides for clearer communication between the field and office personnel.

Why Did the Titanic Sank

Why did the Titanic’s maiden voyage ended in such disaster? One of the largest passenger liner of the early 20th century made in the history, having the first and final voyage 100 years ago, owned by the magnificent White Star Line, was travelling without interference through the calm waters until one of the sailors on board reported that the Titanic is heading for a vast and humongous iceberg in April 12 1912 at that lethal midnight. The disaster had caused 1517 deaths on board, though there were only partially of the passengers that survived the disaster; which strangely are mostly consisted of women and children. In this essay we will embark on a journey to find out the causes of the Titanic’s maiden voyage ended in such disaster. Competition and pressure for Atlantic passengers At that time, Bruce Ismay, the Managing Director of the White Star Line, was fierce about the competition for Atlantic passengers with other companies and the White Star Line wanted to show th em that they could make a six-day crossing from Southampton to New York City. In order to meet this schedule, the Titanic could not afford to slow down, putting pressure on Captain Smith to maintain the travelling speed of the ship.Over confident by Captain Smith of the Titanic As the ship was manoeuvring on calm waters, the captain received several warnings about iceberg. In fact, the captain ignored seven warnings. If he was cautious and more concern than been on schedule, he would have slowed down the ship and put more crews to keep eyes on the icebergs, maybe the Titanic disaster would not have happened. Poor quality of the rivets in Titanic Besides that, a few million rivets were used to hold sections of Titanic together steadily. As some of the rivets were recovered from the wreckage and investigated, the result shows that the rivets were made of sub-standard iron which caused sections of the Titanic to break due to the force of impact of the ship and the iceberg. If a better i ron were used for the rivets, the Titanic may have been able to survive the disaster. No binoculars for lookouts at night time and going too fast Other than that, though there were binoculars aboard the ship, hardly a crew knew there was even one in the ship.It is possible that the crews can give an early warning about the iceberg where the Titanic was heading to. In addition to the worst, as the warning was received by the captain, the ship was in full speed. In quick reaction, the captain adjusted the speed to reverse, which was a mistake. This caused the ship to skid a slightly and hit the iceberg at the side instead of head on. It was believed that if Titanic hit the iceberg head on, other than causing of a disastrous result, the ship may destroy the iceberg instead of vice versa. The lifeboat talesWhen the lifeboats were fitted onto the ship, there were only 16 of them on Titanic, which however only allow approximately 1648 passengers to be rescued, which is about one third of the total amount of people on board. This is because the ship rather provided comfort for the passengers than safety. And since the Titanic had the title of â€Å"unsinkable†, the people grew more confidence and they felt that the Titanic did not need much of the lifeboats. Addition to the trouble, Boards of Trade’s regulation stated that ships over 10 000 tons were only allowed to bring 16 life boats only. This would also mean that out of the original 64 lifeboats Titanic was supposed to carry, the White Star Line only provided life boats as legally required. Next, many of the lifeboats in initial stage were not fully filled and utilized. It was due to the lack of experience and knowledge of the crew members on board. It was believed that only about 50 members of the deck crew knew how to launch the lifeboats. It was Captain Lord of Californian’s fault It was said that the last iceberg warning was sent to Titanic by the Californian, at about 1 hour before the SO S message of Titanic went out.The crew of the Californian were fed up of hearing messages being sent by passengers on the Titanic to friends and family back home, telling about their great experience they had been having. As the crew of Californian saw the fireworks which was intended to be the SOS message, Captain Lord concluded that the passengers on Titanic were having a party. This was one of the great mistakes taken by the Californian crew, if they were patient enough to hear the distress message from the Titanic, they probably can do something such as arriving at the scene of the disaster earlier and save more victims. Conclusion At the end of the essay, there were several hypothesis of the massive and lethal event. Before the journey, the rivets should be made of a better quality of iron so that the ship is durable enough to withstand the impact of iceberg. During the journey, Captain Smith should be more cautious about the warning concerning about the icebergs and alert of fi rst journey of this heavy duty ship and Captain Lord should be a little patient and put more attention on the SOS message which is extremely vital and significant for the people on board of the Titanic could be rescued by them.

MTV Effects essays

MTV Effects essays Music TV channels, broadcasting variety of programs ranging from ordinary music videos through charts, various shows to cartoons are the symptom of our times. No matter if it's MTV or VIVA, they sell very similar stuff, often cheap and shallow. The pop culture and consumption grasped the most powerful device that is television. It is used as a tool for spreading out information, ideas and appeals. Oftentimes they are silly and ridiculous, nevertheless they have enormous influence on people who watch it. Image has become the most widespread form of expressing ideas and for communication. It has been seeded in many people's minds. Colorful and quickly changing pictures surely affect human personality; it influences the way we behave, dress and exist. Young people tend do be and look like their VJ's from the TV screen. They wear in certain way, they cut their hair, pierce or tatoo their bodies, just because of their TV idols doing that. TV hosts become the role models to follow, they are gurus and authorities on almost every field of human life from fashion to ethics and morality. They sell some patterns of behavior that other people can consider weird or outrageous. Their ideas can be good and honorable as well as freak and dumb. TV creates an ideal of a 'perfect' woman and man with all the paraphernalia and pressure connected with it. Many young women (as they appear to be more susceptible to that tension) put themselves on diet, wear strange clothes etc. just to fit in the 'official' picture. International Marketing by Apple †Marketing Essay

International Marketing by Apple – Marketing Essay Free Online Research Papers International Marketing by Apple Marketing Essay Advertise. Webster defines it to â€Å"make publicly and generally known: to call public attention to especially by emphasizing desirable qualities so as to arouse a desire to buy or patronize.† The advertisement business has reached extreme highs in the last decade thanks to the extended communication we now have through technology. It has now become so simple, even to the average individual to promote what ever is desired. If this task has become so effortless for a single person, then why would a huge corporation not be able to do this? Apple Computer, a competitor in today’s world of PC’s, has not succeeded in advertising their product as well as their opponents such as Gateway, Hewlett Packard and their oldest rival, IBM. Despite disastrous losses in the 80s and 90s to their main competitor, IBM, Apple recently re-vamped the entire company. They have focused on marketing and product development. They even introduced the iMac in 1998, which turned out to be the most successful personal computer launch ever. Despite this success, the rapid rate of development within the computer industry indicated that Apple must analyze their previous marketing techniques in order to maintain the high level of success and to keep up with the competition. In order for a product to be successful, especially on the scale of PC’s, people around the world must have it on their mind. People need to be exposed to the idea in many different ways. There are several methods to accomplishing this. The internet, television, movies, radio, billboards, ads and countless other ways are all roads into the advertisement world. Compaq, HP, Gateway and Dell have dominated these fields for years, and Apple has just now in the last couple of years been able to scrape the surface of these ideas. In the last year, cable has been able to televise the first successful set of Apple commercials which showed them to be better and more efficient than their competitors. Capitalizing on major opportunities, Apple stepped up and took over the movie world too. In any movie coming from Hollywood, the only PC logo that is now seen is Apple, whether it is on a laptop or desktop computer, software, iPod or even a sticker. By doing this they have successfully pr omoted high level of graphics and â€Å"easy use.† Apple strove for beauty this year and they achieved this through the iMac and iPod. The iMac is an affordable, hassle free, plug and surf, personal computer that competes with other firms in the market. Another part of the marketing technique Apple used for the iMac was through the individuality of people. They produced the computer in different colors. People were able to customize their personal computers for the first time in any way they wanted. They extended this idea to the iPod products. Once again, this method of reaching out to the people’s individuality caused a boom in sales across the world. Their updated software has been another step in the business world for Apple. MacOS and MacOSX has been a wonderful transition for people use to using the Windows operating system. It has proven to be much faster and easier to use. Tthe new MacOS is equipped with one feature that no other operating system has, and that is speech recognition. An addition to the great new technologies being introduced and supported is the continued excellence for the graphics in the industry. These Apple produced computers are the fastest personal computers on the market today, beating other computers such as the Gateway 550-MHz Pentium III PC. Finally, the new Macintosh operating systems are showing great support for the futurist programming language of Java. This is a wireless networking system that lets you travel up to 150 feet away from the base station. Apple’s ad campaign is based on the two words of â€Å"Think Different†, and I believe they are beginning to take their own advice. Apple has always supported graphical software and hardware but the continued vision of where the industry is going with software titles like Adobe PhotoShop and Apple’s new FinalCut Pro surpasses anything the rest of the other computer and software makers have to offer. With this, I believe Apple is likely to become a major player, again, in the industry of personal computing. I personally have only used an Apple computer, such as the iMac, for small assignments before, but enjoyed what I saw. The graphics that were produced were very clear and crisp. The iPod on the other hand, I have been able to use for several things. It is capable to hold thousands of songs, pictures and other data. It is very convenient. I do believe though that in order for Apple to continue to produce such products they will have to step it up even more to get their name out. I’m sure that the computers produced by this company are worth the price people pay for them, which can range from $800 to over $3000, but they may be more successful in advertisement if they offered a low-end computer that would be able to compete with Dell’s low-end computer of $299. In past years, Apple was on a downward spiral, but now the Mac is back on the right track. The interim CEO Steve Jobs has brought them from expected quarterly loses to now, first quarter net income of some 150 millions dollars. The question still remains, is Apple back to stay? With the Windows driven world of today, can Apple assert them self to claim market share? Apple’s stunning new hardware, user-friendly operating system, and drive for incredible new technology, will not only compare Apple to traditional PC and software maker but will stun the rest of the computer world along the way. The award amounts of these scholarships can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars or more. Most of the scholarships are used to help pay for school, but others are for funding future service trips or projects. What Qualities Do Evaluators Look For in Community Service Scholarship Applications? The exact qualities vary for each scholarship, but in general evaluators look for: Commitment to community service and bettering the lives of others A deep interest in your volunteer work Leadership experience Work that had a strong positive impact on your community Personal growth as a result of community service Read on to learn how to emphasize these qualities in your application and for step-by-step guidelines to crafting a strong application that will increase your chances of winning a community service scholarship. #1: Develop a Strong Record of Community Service The most important way to increase your chances of winning a community service scholarship is to have a strong record of community service.Even if you write a brilliant essay, have top grades, and submit glowing letters of recommendation, if you don’t have a history of significant and dedicated community service, it will be practically impossible to win a community service scholarship. It’s obviously easier to strengthen your community service if you are younger and have more time before applying for scholarships, but even people without a lot of time can make improvements to their community service record.Listed below are components of strong community service records to aim for in your own work. Qualities of Strong Community Service: Working Primarily at One Location or in One Field Dedicating months or even years to volunteering at one place or within one field (such as education or medicine) is more impressive than spending a few hours volunteering at many different places, because it shows dedication and passion for a cause. If, for example, all your volunteer experiences have involved working with animals, the people reviewing your application will be able to clearly see what your interests are and get a better understanding of your personality and the issues you care about. Leadership Experience Colleges are always looking for leaders because they are often more likely to have a larger impact on the world.Ways to show leadership through your community service experiences include gaining more responsibility over time, developing or leading the planning of a new project, and supervising other volunteers. Regularly Participating in Community Service The people and organizations awarding scholarships want to see a significant commitment to helping others, which means they prefer applicants who haveregularly participated in community service over a long period of time. This often means months or years of volunteer work.If you haven’t been involved in community service for very long, try to volunteer regularly and look for leadership opportunities in order to strengthen this part of your service. Helping People or a Place You Care About A passion for helping others is a critical part of most community service scholarships, so reviewers want to see applicants who have strong reasons for volunteering.Hopefully, you had important reasons for choosing to volunteer where you did. Do you plan to work in a similar field in the future? Was this place important to you growing up? Did you have a particularly influential tutor while growing up and want to provide the same guidance to someone else? Discuss these reasons in your essay and/or have someone else discuss them in your letter of recommendation.Try to develop relationships with the people you are helping and the people you are working with. Not only will this make your volunteer work more enjoyable, it will also likely increase the positive impact you have and make people more willing to write you a great letter of recommendation. #2: Analyze Your Community Service Experiences The application process for most community service scholarships requires you to think critically about your community service and its impact on your life.Thinking about this now, early on in the process, will give you time to review and strengthen your answers and will also help you choose which scholarships to apply for and how to structure your essays later on. Ask yourself the following questions, and write the answers down somewhere where you can reference them again as you complete your applications: What made you first choose to participate in community service? Why did you choose to volunteer where you did? How has your community service changed you? How has your community service benefited others? What is your favorite memory from community service? What friendships have you gained as a result of your community service? #3: Have Solid Academics Even though the people reviewing your application are particularly interested in your community service, they also want to award the scholarships to strong students, as the majority of these scholarships will be used to pay for college. Many community service scholarships require a minimum GPA, and somealso require completing particular coursework, such as taking certain math courses for scholarships geared towards STEM students. For most community service scholarships, the stronger your grades and academic work, the better your chance of winning. This includes your GPA, class rank, and rigor of your courses. Some scholarships are also only given to students planning on majoring in a particular field or who plan on pursuing a particular career, such as nursing or social work. If your grades aren’t as high as you’d like them to be, there are some community service scholarships that do not take your grades into account, so you may want to focus on applying to those. #4: Research Different Scholarships After you've spent time strengthening and thinking about your community service experiences, it’s time to start looking for scholarships. There are hundreds of community service scholarships available, and we have a guide that includes a complete list of them! You can also see ifyour high school or future college offers community service scholarships, or search online. You can search for scholarships based on the type of community service performed, specific colleges you’d like to apply to, GPA requirements, and more. Before you apply to a scholarship, it's important to check whetheryou meet its eligibility requirements. Many community service scholarships have very specific requirements for things such as applicants’ age, race, GPA, and financial need.Check eligibility carefully now so that you don’t waste time applying for a scholarship you don’t quality for. You also shouldn't apply to just one scholarship. One of the best ways to increase your chances of winning a community service scholarship is to apply for multiple scholarships.Keep in mind as well that not all community scholarships are restricted to high school seniors, so you may be able to start applying earlier and build up your scholarship fund. Throughout this process, you should also be paying careful attention to application deadlines. Many deadlines are early in the school year, so try to start your applications early and use a calendar to keep track of when materials need to be submitted. #5: Write a Strong Essay Almost all community service scholarships require an essay in order to apply, and they are often the most important part of your application.Your essay gives you the chance to explain what you did during your community service, the impact it had on others, and the impact it had on you. These are all things that are very important to scholarship committees. Before you begin any essay, make sure you carefully read the instructions. Different scholarships will want your essay to focus on different aspects of your community service. Some want you to discuss how you changed, while others want you to focus more on how you helped others. Some want you to describe one specific memory from your community service while others want a broad overview of your work. Pay attention to this, because even if you write a wonderful essay, if it wasn’t on what the instructions asked for, you won’t win the scholarship. If you are applying to multiple scholarships, also be prepared to write different essays for each of them, although you can often reuse parts of one essay for other scholarships. We have a guide thatexplains step-by-step how to write great community service essays. Some major points to keep in mind are: Include specific details about your experience so people reading your essay better understand the work you did. Discuss specific projects, moments, and people in your essay. Highlight your personal strengths so readers get a better sense of your personality. Are you a motivated leader? A natural people person? Give examples to support this. Make your accomplishments clear. What was the impact of your community service? Who did it help? How did it improve your community? Image Source: Jonathan Kim/Flickr #6: Get Excellent Letters of Recommendation Not all scholarships require submitting a letter or letters of recommendation, but when they are required, they are usually a very important part of the application. We have a guide that gives a complete overview of how to get a great letter of recommendation. Some of the main points to consider are: Ask your community service supervisor to write your letter, as they will often be able to fully describe the work you did and write professionally. If your supervisor doesn’t know you particularly well, you may consider asking a coworker write you a letter instead, if that is allowed by the scholarship’s guidelines. Talk to the person writing your letter about what you’d like them to include, such as particular projects, examples of leadership, or times you worked well with others. Remember that youwill get the best letters of recommendation if you have developed strong relationships with people you volunteer with and if you’ve spent a significant amount of time working at one place. This is again why having a strong record of community service is so important for winning scholarships. #7: Gather Additional Materials Writing the essay and getting letters of recommendation are usually the most challenging parts of applying for community service scholarships, but once you have finished with those, don’t forget some of the smaller application requirements. Most community service scholarships request some additional application materials. The specific material needed varies for each scholarship, but can often include: School transcripts Your work history A list of your other extracurricular activities Awards or honors you've received Proof of financial need Some scholarships have different submission deadlines for different parts of the application, so make sure you are staying organized and submitting each of the application materials on time. #8: Review and Submit! The final step before you submit your application should be to check over each of your application materials. Is your essay as strong and specific as it could be? Do you have each piece of information you need to apply? It’s often useful to have someone else, such as a parent or teacher, look over your application, particularly the essay. Many times they can give valuable feedback that will help make your application even stronger. Once you are confident with everything, it’s time to submit! If there is a website for the scholarship, it will usually mention when winners will be notified, but if you can’t find this information, feel free to contact someone who helps organize the scholarship and ask them.Good luck! Report style Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Report style - Essay Example One of the most important target audiences would be teens and adults that embrace a healthier lifestyle, and as such it is the case that a soft drink could be developed to match the needs of this demographic. A few considerations should be made as to what people would be looking for. Should a drink be made no-calorie, mid-calorie or standard-calorie? If designing a drink around health benefits one is naturally inclined to desire a no-calorie drink however this may draw attention from consumers who are opposed to using aspartame or other non sugar based sweeteners. Moreover the company does not want to draw comparisons with their last mid calorie drink launch ‘Coke Blak† which more or less was a ultimately withdrawn from the market owing to the fact that he company had a poor marketing strategy and the product generally had a displeasing taste. In this regard the company could look to a full calorie beverage but the question remains as to how a healthy image could be promo ted? In this regard, Coca-Cola should look to creating a natural version of its drink which has all of the same properties of its current beverage but without using high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, colouring and utilizing naturally sourced ingredients. From this perspective the company can compete head on with Pepsi-Raw but it can still be promoted as a healthy alternative to most soft drinks. Why this proposal would be successful is two fold. Firstly this product satisfies a need in the market owing to the fact that most soft-drinks and energy drinks are either saturated with standard sweetning agents or with sugar substitutes where there has been very little presence of a ‘all natural’ soft drink. Moreover this product could appeal to a generation of people that are still interested in treating themselves to a soft-drink yet do not want to drink all of the related chemicals assuming an effective marketing and promotion strategy is

Knowlegde Management - Essay Example However, there are several universal theories, which have explained knowledge in two types, viz. explicit and implicit knowledge. Explicit knowledge is gained through understanding and implicit knowledge is gained through skills and expertise of an individual. Similarly, Knowledge Management (KM) can be determined as a significant aspect in relation to the creation and management of knowledge. In an organisational context, KM can be defined as the process of collecting, managing and sharing the knowledge of various employees in an organisation that may help it in improving its business activity along with creating more effectiveness in its overall functioning by building better coordination amid different divisions of the organisation (Bhojaraju, 2005). Correspondingly, this paper intends to provide a brief explanation of knowledge and knowledge management highlighting the differentiation persisting between KM and Information Management (IM). The paper also describes the success factors required in measuring KM along with the aspects resulting in failure of KM within any organisational environment. In an organisational context, KM is regarded as a systematic approach of gathering, improving, sharing and using knowledge effectually with an expectation that it will help the organisation to innovate its business activity. On the other hand, IM is referred to the process of gathering and managing information obtained from more than one source and distributing it to the employees of an organisation in order to ensure that the information being used by the organisation will result in improving and improvising the business process of an organisation. Therefore, through these elaborations it can be understood that there is a vast difference between KM and IM, wherein both these types of management is quite important for an organisation. Correspondingly, it can be understood that the difference between KM and

Secondly, the rich people or the upper class uses to settle in this area to discover business ventures and to earn a lot of money. If one has the correct approach and rock-hard info on what to anticipate, one can be a middle school specialist in no time. In middle school, I made up a large number of upper-class friends since the start of my school days. In my school, there was a categorized difference in the lower or poor class students and the upper or elite class. Classmates felt very proud if they had any elite classmate in their group. There was a marked difference in the treatment as well. ...I packed myself in a lot of social friends who belong to high-status families. In my own class, I was quite powerful to turn things in favor of me as I belonged to the top social category. I use to rule over my classmates. My ego was quite strong in my social behaviors and I use to talk to classmates of my set only and never use to talk even a bit too poor fellows. Some of these elite classmates were even junkies as if bullying poor classmates, buying expensive stuff, showing off, mocking, playing video games, having fun all the time with luxuries and not more serious about the studies. Most of them were not good graders even. When my poor fellows who were the top graders, tried to be friendly with me, I just harassed theme and passed bad comments of them being poor so badly that it would have been very insulting for them.  Ã‚   There was a girl in my class who belonged to lower social class, was quite studious and wanted to be my friend but never actually told me directly.

Beethovens love life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Beethovens love life - Essay Example However, because Brunsvik’s mother arranged a marriage to a much older man of a higher social class, Beethoven had to suppress his feelings for her. Brunsvik felt much the same way about Beethoven, and it wasn’t until her husband died that the love affair between the two of them grew. Over the course of the next few years, Beethoven wrote many love letters for Brunsvik that professed his love for her. However, Brunsvik’s family put her under pressure to end the relationship for the simple fact that Beethoven was a commoner. If she had married Beethoven, she would have lost guardianship of her children from her first marriage. Despite this, Beethoven continued to pursue Brunsvik secretly, although this never amounted to anything. Another woman that Beethoven had strong feelings for was one of his closest friends, Therese Malfetti. It is thought that Beethoven’s famous piece Fur Elise was dedicated to her. The overriding common denominator in all of Beethoven’s relationships is that he pursued women of a much higher social class, which inevitably meant that he was unable to marry any of

Strategic management. Current strategic structure for Qantas airline Essay

Strategic management. Current strategic structure for Qantas airline - Essay Example The company is an award winner for being in the top 6 airlines in the world for the past 5 consecutive years. The in flight entertainment and wine list have also won it numerous awards.Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce has outstanding leadership experience in airlines and, therefore, understands the operation relatively well. Qantas has a strong governance structure and board which includes individuals with a wide range of experiences. The airline also operates a range of businesses that include baggage handling, check in and passenger lounges. It also operates Qantas catering that runs two businesses: Snap Fresh, a big manufacturer of frozen meats and other, different meal components; Q catering this is premium catering businesses. Q catering operates 7 centers across Australia and also sells to other airlines. It also supplies about four million bottles of the country’s wine. The airline has interests in the Singapore firm Holiday Tours and Travel. The airline merged wi th Jet set in July 2008, to create Jet set Travel World, where Qantas Airline owns 58 percent. Qantas program, frequent flyer, is another business with 15 million members. The program supplied over 450000 award seats on the program partner airlines. Qantas engineering runs a large maintenance and repair business that has earned the tag of being the best for their safety records. The airline also operates a holiday travel business. Qantas airline is a well branded airline as the spirit of Australia, and it has a number of outstanding accepted TV advertisements on this theme. Domestically, it is a well supported full service airline and in the Global travel as the Australian airline. The airline has still managed to be among the world’s most profitable airlines. However, in mid 2009 the profits became predicted to fall by 100 million. In response to this financial crisis Qantas airline has grounded decided to ground 10 aircraft, and has also informed Boeing that it will defer i ts orders for the 737-14 version of the aircraft and also a delay for the delivery of the new 15, 787 Dream liners. The decisions taken by the outgoing CEO George Dixon, to save money, has affected the airline both negatively and positively. He improved the bottom line but destroyed the operations of the Qantas engineers and the baggage handlers. British airways and Qantas airline underwent a number of merger talks in the late 2008. The benefits of this merger was the economies of scale present in the buying and flying of the aircraft, joint frequent flyer scheme and also, the joint IT scheme. However, problems in negotiations proved that the merger would not proceed, and the Qantas executives claimed to be looking for mergers with other airlines. The downsizing of the airline led to a number of strikes by the airline engineers and the baggage handlers. The CEO decision to outsource about 7000 of the airline employees became unwelcome (Hanson, 2010). This number of strikes have cost the airline lost revenue as more than 300 flights had to be cancelled during the period of the standoff between the management unions and the management board. During this period, Qantas airline lost Air New Zealand, which transitioned out of its maintenance contract with the airline, and opted to use the Cathay Pacific maintenance people. The strikes have proven fact that the Qantas airline workforce got well unionized and aggressive in the defense of their working conditions. Corporate and Business Strategy using the Balanced Score Board I have recommended the intensive strategy that includes; market penetration, market development and market development. Due to the nature of the industry the strategy is best for the company to survive. Market penetration should be implemented when the present market becomes not saturated, the rate of the current customers can be increased, and sales in the industry are increasing. In market penetration, the number of the sales person gets increa sed, increasing

Romantic Love and Marriage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Romantic Love and Marriage - Essay Example Recent statistics suggests that romantic love is not the only principle of long-lasting and happy marriage. Today, the main reasons of divorces include early marriages, different opinions about their responsibilities in a family, and getting marriages without mutual feelings. One third of all families in the USA are divorced in spite of the fact that they have romantic love and true feelings when they married (Chalmers 2006). In contrast, those families and partners who did not have true romantic feelings when married are more stable unions and only 10% of such families are divorced. Thesis Romantic love is not the only principles of happy and stable marriage. The partners in a successful marriage are those who have learned how to function after the music stops, after romance and its heart-tripping frenzy has cooled. Everyone's heard that love can't last forever, and this is true simply because you don't live forever. But love does often last a lifetime, although its nature changes over the years. Margaret Reedy of the University of Southern California has studied this idea of loving happily ever after and the age differences in satisfying love relationships. She chose 102 married couples for her study. They were people who had been judged by others who knew them well to be very much in love (Sternberg and Barnes 22). They were divided into three groups: young adults, married an average of five years; middle-aged adults, married an average of twenty-one years; and older adults, married an average of thirty-seven years. Each of the satisfied lovers was asked to complete a list of statements, rating each in terms of how well it described hi s or her current love relationship. These statements reflected a wide variety of possible experiences people might have in love relationships, and in turn reflected the six components of love we mentioned earlier (emotional security, referring to feelings of trust, caring, concern and warmth; respect, which means being able to be tolerant, understanding and patient; the ability to spend time together, working as well as playing; communication, being able to be honest and self-revealing, and being a good listener; loyalty, or a sense of investment and commitment; sexual intimacy). Statistical results suggest that "The divorce rate in 2005 (per 1,000 people) was 3.6 -- the lowest rate since 1970, and down from 4.2 in 2000 and from 4.7 in 1990" (Divorce statistics 2008). There was, first of all, a clear indication that the nature of love in satisfying relationships is different at different ages. For example, the couples who assessed their current love alliance supported the common ide a that passion and sexual intimacy are relatively more important in early adulthood, whereas tender feelings of affection and loyalty are more important in the love relationships of later life. The findings also supported the notion that, over time, love associations are less likely to be based on intense companionship and communication, and more likely to be base

Religion and Filipino Mothers Essay Example for Free

Religion and Filipino Mothers Essay Rizal’s Reminders on Equality, Self – Respect and True Spirit of Religion 1. The tyranny of some is possible only through cowardice and negligence on the part of others. 2. What makes one contemptible is lack of dignity and abject fear of one who holds one in contempt. 3. Ignorance is servitude, because as a man thinks, so he is; a man who does not think for himself and allows himself to be guided by the thought of another is like a beast led by a halter, 4. He who loves his independence must first aid his fellowman, because he who refuses protection to others will find himself without it. 5. If the Filipina will not change her mode of being, let her rear no more children, let her merely give birth to them. She must cease to be the mistress of the home, otherwise she will unconsciously betray husband, child, native, land and all. 6. All men are born equal, naked, without bonds. God did not create man to be a slave; nor did he endow him with intelligence to have him hoodwinked or adorn him with reason to have deceived by others. 7. Consider well what kind of religion they are teaching you. See whether it is the will of God or according to the teachings of Christ that the poor be succored and those who suffer alleviated. In summary, Rizal ‘s Letter To the Young Women of Malolos focused on five major points (Zaide Zaide, 1999) 1. Filipino mothers should teach their children love of God, country and fellowman. 2. Filipino mothers should be glad and honored, like Spartan mothers to offer their sons in defense of their country. 3. Filipino women should know how to protect their dignity and honor. 4. Filipino women should educate themselves aside from retaining their good radical values. 5. Faith is not merely reciting prayers and wearing religious pictures. It is living the real Christian way with good morals and manners.

Connection of the Mind and Body

Connection of the Mind and Body Paragraphs 1) Why do we feel the way we feel? They rush through you menacingly on a mountain trail when you mistake a twisted stick for a snake or when you feel as if a spider is walking down your neck) . They wash over you gently when your newborn looks your way or when you see any affectionate scene. And when you gaze upon a Monet or call to mind a lilting line of verse, they bring you warmth. Feelings and emotions are woven through every human experience. Emotions are just a part of the human nature. simply, human beings are the most self-conscious animals, and their emotions are considered as base leftovers of their animal selves. societies created civilizations which demanded the need for emotions. the development and prosperities required the formation of numerous feelings. emotions are astounding, indescribable and ineffable ingredients of the human spirit. they are naturally occurring responses and the result of judgments to any situation or a perception of changes taking place within our bodies . for example, we experie nce disgust because our body undergoes physiological changes like queasiness and increased skin temperature at the sight of vomit. emotions generally are dictated to individuals rather than society; they are a result of a persons own evaluation or automatic one to an incident. they are stimulators of reactions based on self-awareness, self consciousness, and the ability to emphasize with others. emotions represent a synthesis of subjective experience, expressive behavior and neurochemical activity. there is a great wide variety of emotions including: anger, fear surprise, disgust, joy and sadness. Feelings can be conscious or unconscious, expressed or unexpressed, positive or negativeor simultaneous. Emotion is at the core of human beings lives, underlying perhaps peoples every motivation, many researchers now agree. It is what we are about, said UC San Francisco psychologist Paul Ekman, an expert decoder of facial expressions. emotions were also described by Department of Veterans Affairs psychiatrist Leslie Brothers as an intangible matter, When you get right down to it, she said, emotion is just a fuzzy, moving target. . . . Its like trying to grab fog. Your hand keeps moving through it. http://smallseotools.com/plagiarism-checker/ 2) How do our thoughts and emotions affect our health? In Woody Allens movie Manhattan, Diane Keaton is breaking up with Woody and wants to know why he isnt angry. I dont get angry, Allen replies, I grow a tumor instead. the mind and emotions play a very important role in the state of health. Therefore, its important for us to recognize and identify our thoughts and emotions, and to be aware of the impact they have—not only on each other, but also on our bodies, behavior, and relationships. Emotions that are freely experienced and expressed without judgment or attachment tend to flow fluidly. On the other hand, repressed emotions (especially fearful or negative ones) can zap mental energy and lead to health problems. emotional disturbances and disorders lead to poor performance of body activities and brings down the immune system making a person more vulnerable for infection, also leads to metabolic illnesses like diabetes. negative feelings like chronic stress from negative attitudes and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness can upset the bodys hormone balance and deplete the brain chemicals required for feelings of happiness. New scientific understandings have also identified the process by which chronic stress can actually decrease peoples lifespan by shortening their telomeres (the â€Å"end caps† of our DNA strands, which play a big role in aging). Poorly managed or repressed anger (hostility) is also related to a slew of health conditions, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, and infection. negative feelings generally are found to cause heart attacks, cancer, back pain, change in appetite, and chest pain. not only that, but also constipation or diarrhea, dry mouth, insomnia (sleep disorder), sexual problem and sweating. in addition, negative feelings cause palpitations (heart racing), shortness of breath and stiff neck. Positive attitudes on the other hand—such as playfulness, gratitude, awe, love, interest, serenity, and feeling connected to others—have a direct impact on health and wellbeing. The attitude of forgiveness—fully accepting that a negative circumstance has occurred and relinquishing negative feelings surrounding the event—can lead us to experience better mental, emotional and physical health. The Stanford Forgiveness Project trained 260 adults in forgiveness in a 6-week course.70% reported a decrease in their feelings of hurt, 13% experienced reduced anger, 27% experienced fewer physical complaints (for example, pain, gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, etc.) In a landmark study, people who were asked to count their blessings felt happier, exercised more, had fewer physical complaints, and slept better than those who created lists of hassles. Positive emotions generally lead to faster recovery from cardiovascular stress, better sleep, and fewer colds. not onl y that, but also they generate a great sense of overall happiness, physical homeostasis and evokes healthy behavioral responses: less likely to smoke or drink and more likely to exercise. positive feelings lead to a Beneficial physiological responses which include improved sleep quality, and higher levels of antioxidants or good (HDL) cholesterol. 3) Are our bodies and minds distinct from each other or do they function together as parts of an interconnected systems? In the history of thought, the idea that the mind and body are separate has been hotly debated. Probably the most famous statement of mind/body dualism is from the philosopherRenà © Descartes, who in the 17th century argued that there are two different kinds of stuff in the world: stuff extended in space (such as chairs, computers, and human bodies) and stuff which lacks extension but somehow exists as an immaterial substance (the human mind). Many ancient healing systems emphasize the interconnection between mind and body in healing, including Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, who taught that good health depends on a balance of mind, body, and environment. our bodies and minds are interconnected. the mind is responsible for sending signals which are basically the language of the body. These signals can be hormones which are a type of chemical messengers released by cells and glands. These hormones can be growth factors or other chemicals that influence cells and neurons. there are many systems in the brain that are regulates various functions in the body. First, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a part of the inner structure of the brain and is a part of the nervous system. It is responsible for regulating involuntary body functions, such as heartbeat, blood flow, breathing and digestion. it also controls all the muscles, organs and glands. When something goes wrong in this system, it can cause serious problems, including blood pressure problems, heart problems, trouble with breathing and swallowing, and erectile dysfunction in men. Autonomic nervous system disorders can occur alone or as the result of another disease, such asParkinsons disease, alcoholism and diabetes. Some autonomic nervous system disorders get better when an underlying disease is treated. This system is further divided into two branches: the sympathetic system and the parasympathetic system. The sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system regulates the flight-or-fig ht responses (refers to a physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of something that is terrifying, either mentally or physically). This division also performs such tasks as relaxing the bladder, speeding up heart rate and dilating eye pupils. It increases blood pressure and heart rate. Furthermore, the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system helps maintain normal body functions and conserves physical resources. This division also performs such tasks as controlling the bladder, slowing down heart rate and constricting eye pupils. most importantly, the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic system is extremely vital. last but not least, the prefrontal cortex is located in the front of the brain below the forehead. it is responsible for personality expression and planning of complex behaviors and decision-making. people experience the connection everyday in situations ranging from mouth-watering over a delicious looking dessert to butterflies be fore a presentation. in the end, negative outcomes can result from the mind and body interconnection including the failure to meet athletic, academic or professional goal due to fear by the mind. 4) What is the mystery behind the gap that connects our brains to our emotions? The mystery behind the gap that connects the brains to the emotions can be represented in one simple word, neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the master mind of communication; they are the brain chemicals that communicate information throughout our brain and body. It is a simple process in which the brains consists of nervous cells called neurons which pass notes to control everything in the body. the neurotransmitter send messages from neuron to neuron which consequently determines our emotions and feelings and positive or negative mood. The brain uses neurotransmitters to tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, and your stomach to digest. They can also affect mood, sleep, concentration, weight, and can cause adverse symptoms when they are out of balance. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that 86% of Americans have suboptimal neurotransmitter levels. Stress, poor diet, neurotoxins, genetic predisposition, drugs (prescription and recreational), alcohol and caffeine u sage can cause these levels to be out of optimal range. Different neurotransmitters govern different emotions. For example, serotonin calms us down and helps keep us in a good mood. Serotonin also regulates many other processes such as carbohydrate cravings, sleep cycle, pain control and appropriate digestion. Low serotonin levels are also associated with decreased immune system function. Second, dopamine helps people face life challenges with energy and confidence. It helps with depression as well as focus. Third, norepinephrine disperses concentration, alertness and motivation. It can cause anxiety at elevated excretion levels as well as some mood dampening effects. Low levels of norepinephrine are associated with low energy, decreased focus ability and sleep cycle problems.

Native American Woman: Zitkala-Sa

Vanessa Melton-Wampler SOCI3093. 50 March 18, 2013 Professor Thomas Native American Woman: Zitkala-Sa The month of March is Women’s History Month and one of my favorite months of the year. This month has the opportunity to entice people learn about women from all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds, and encourage women to admire those who’ve made a difference. There are many Native American women who’ve fought and died for the rights of their tribe and sex, but she is by far one of my favorite ones.Through literature, music, and politics, she fought to change the thoughts and beliefs of White America so their views of Native American culture could be better ones. Name of Important Woman I chose to write about one of my favorite Native American authors and activists, Gertrude Simmons Bonnin. Zitkala Sa, which means Red Bird in the Lakota dialect, is a name she gave herself after she left the tribe and graduated from college (Giese 1996) so she is known by both nam es.She was born February 22, 1876 at the Yankton Sioux Reservation (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27) and she â€Å"died at 61 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery (due to her husband's service in World War I)† in 1938 (Hoefel 1999). Racial/Ethnic Background Gertrude Simmons Bonnin is considered a part of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. She was the mixed child of John Haysting Simmons, a man of Anglo-French decent (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27) and full blooded Yankton Sioux Indian Ellen Tate ‘I yohiwin â€Å"She Reaches for the Wind† Simmons (Henderson 1997). She dentified more with her Native American roots because of the traditional teachings her mother taught her. Her mother taught her the ways and language of the Yankton Sioux and even raised her in â€Å"a tipi on the Missouri River until she was 12† (Hoefel 1999). Justification Gertrude Simmons Bonnin/Zitkala-Sa is such an important woman because of her positive contributions to the Native American community. Bonn in not only was â€Å"one of the leading figures in the Pan-Indian movement† she â€Å"dedicated her life to improving the social and educational awareness of American Indians† (Johnson and Wilson 1988:27).She used her writing skills to fight for new legislation that favored Native Americans. Her involvement as editor of the American Indian Magazine, a quarterly magazine for the Indian Rights Association (SAI) helped to keep her people informed of any new legislation (Johnson and Wilson 1988:30). Life History It was at this age when Ellen Tate ‘Iyohiwin Simmons decided to send her daughter to the same boarding school she attended so Bonnin would have the â€Å"ability to fend for herself later in life among an increasing number of palefaces† (Hoefel 1999).The boarding school Gertrude Bonnin attended was run by Quaker Missionaries in Wabash, Indiana. The White’s Manual Labor Institute became Bonnin’s home for four years until she returned to t he reservation in South Dakota. Against her mother’s wishes, she decided to seek higher education by attending another school even further from home called the Santee Normal Training School in Nebraska. After graduating from that school, Bonnin went on to get several scholarships, degrees, and accolades from Earlham College in Indiana and Boston Conservatory of Music. After college, she retained a teaching job at the Carlisle Indian School. This school was founded by Richard Henry Pratt, an army officer with the mottoes â€Å"’From savagery to civilization’ and ‘We must kill the savage to save the man’† (Giese 1996). In addition to his mottoes, â€Å"Pratt abusively exploited the students for labor while at the same time receiving government funds for each student attending the school† (Henderson 1997). During the two years she taught at the school, she wrote about the punishments done to the students who didn’t conform. This is w hen she became known as Zitkala-Sa; writer and activist. She was criticized â€Å"because many felt she showed no gratitude for the kindness and support that the white people had given her in her education† (ibid. ). She married Captain Raymond Bonnin, who was a mixed Native American just like she was. Together they had a son and lived on the Ute Reservation in Utah for fourteen years. It was there she actively got involved in the movement for changes within the Native American community.Through her efforts, Bonnin gained an ally named Montezuma who â€Å"echoed [Bonnin’s] anti-BIA sentiments† and supported her fight to grant the Indians full citizenship rights so they could determine their own fate (Johnson and Wilson 1988:34). Contributions During her lifetime, Bonnin accomplished a lot in the name of her Native American heritage. In 1916, the Bonnin’s moved to Washington DC where she acted as secretary and editor of the American Indian Magazine. She fo ught to ban the use of peyote amongst her people. She â€Å"aired such controversial issues as enfranchisement, Indian military service in World War I, corruption in the BIA, and allotment of tribal lands† (Hoefel 1999). She has expressed her voice and political opinions through her various different writings: Oklahoma's Poor Rich Indians: An Orgy of Graft, Exploitation of the Five Civilized Tribes, Legalized Robbery (1924), American Indian Stories (1921), â€Å"Why I Am a Pagan† (1902), The School Days of an Indian Girl, and An Indian Teacher Among Indians. In addition to her numerous publishing’s about Native American life and her autobiographies, she also was a leader amongst her people. She and her husband founded the National Council of American Indians in 1926. Legacies She was the first and only president of the NCAI, where she â€Å"was the sole support of the organization, through speaking engagements to women’s groups† (Giese 1996) and whil e she was alive, its membership was made up of only Native Americans. It is never too late to give up our prejudices

People have always been and always will be prejudiced. There are prejudices of all kinds. Some have prejudices about skin color or religion, others about nationality or sexuality or something else. And other people are prejudiced about everything that they do not consider normal. Henry David Thoreau said: â€Å"It is never too late to give up our prejudices†. And for some people It Is true: they outgrow their prejudices and learn to be more unbiased. Then there are those who retain their prejudices all theirs life. People do not like to admit that they are wrong, so the latter are unfortunately the majority In our world. We can all agree that most prejudices are taught to us by our parents and the environment we grow up In. In the period of Nazism children In Germany and other Nan countries were taught from birth to hate Jews and Gypsies. It was the policy of government and It was dangerous to behave differently. Nowadays the majority of those people's descendants do not have t hese prejudices. They have learnt from their forefathers' mistakes and now are a lot more tolerate. Of course, there are still those who hate people of different nationality in different countries. There are still a lot of hate crimes, in which the victim is targeted because of his or her race, religion, sexuality and so on. While it is true that there are people so bigoted they can never let go of their prejudices, there are others who change theirs views and abandon their prejudiced ways. People are usually biased against things they have no idea about. So for them to let go of these prejudices they must learn about different things, get to know all kinds of people, make friends and try to see things from their point of view. Then they will be able to understand that different does not mean weird or freaky. Normality is overrated anyway. Everybody is deferent in one way or another. We are not robots after all to be the same. To be different, not like everybody else is wonderful. It does not make you a freak. Unfortunately people are afraid of those who are not like them and we usually hate something we fear. There was the UK Klux Klan in the USA. It was a secret organization of White Protestant Americans, mainly in the South, who used violence against Blacks, Jews, and other minority groups. They used to terrorize those they did not like. And these minority groups could very rarely find protection and Justice: if o were Black you had little to no rights. There are a lot films made and books written about this. Now the USA government proclaims tolerance: all people are equal under the law, have the same rights and responsibilities.Things change, people are too. It is the way of life. In my opinion, all people should be equal. We are all human beings at the end of the day. We all can and must learn to be as open- minded as possible. We must learn to live without hate and fear. These feelings nobody ever made happy. Therefore a life with no prejudices Is better th an with them. Our prejudices†. And for some people it is true: they outgrow their prejudices and unfortunately the majority in our world. We can all agree that most prejudices are taught to us by our parents and the environment we grow up in. Effective teamwork Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Effective teamwork - Essay Example Organizations all over the world are looking for new work structures or forms and concepts so that they can comply with their internal and external demands, and this puts them an edge over their competitors (Rosenhauer, 2009). For this reason, teams have become an integral tool in many organizations for the purpose of management to ensure that the external and internal demands are met. Despite the fact that not all teams will work well, they are known to harness the collective energy of all members and there needs to be proper strategies to be followed to ensure that teams are effective. Teams refer to a group of individuals who have complementary skills and committed to a common goal, which they will be mutually accountable to ensure its success. Team members will come up with a distinct identity the work together by supporting each other to ensure that they achieve their set objective. Accomplishing a task is the extent, to which a team’s effectiveness is determined, and tea ms achieve this because working together and combining the different expertise goes a long way in ensuring success of any endeavor. Successful teams will be determined by the levels team spirit, which ensure trust, respect for one another, helping each other and being collaborative (West, 2004). Bringing people together does not necessarily mean that they will work effectively as a team and make the right decisions. People in a team will come from different backgrounds, and this can be a plus or a minus depending on how the team members relate, and this means that teams can either help or frustrate the emotional or social needs of members, which determines the effectiveness of the team. Team indifference results as a product of failing to enhance good teamwork, which is likely to result to poor performance. Effective teamwork will require certain measures put in place to ensure that people who are put together work collaboratively to achieve the set ends. Resources are an important success factor for a team and forming a team whose resources, task and membership matches is paramount when considering forming a team. This is because lack of resources may result to scramble of the available ones, which may cause stifles in the workforce. Good leadership is also paramount to the success of any team as the leader will coordinate the activities of the team to ensure that all members accomplish their tasks to ensure that there are no delays in delivery of the products (West, 2004). Team member commitment plays an integral part as no member will want to work more than the other members. Members should identify with their goals and ensure that they have achieved their task, which eliminates the chances of certain members feeling that they are overworked. Developing team goals plays an important role in ensuring that the members have focus on the ends that they are supposed to meet and this gives them a shared vision, which will motivate them as they want to achieve the set goal by the allocated time. Common ownership and joint responsibility is the other determining factor of an effective team as this will ensure that team members are in unison and are determined to achieve the set

Experiencing Long-term Care, Rehabilitation & Recovery (BSc Adult Essay

Experiencing Long-term Care, Rehabilitation & Recovery (BSc Adult Nursing) - Essay Example The study focuses on two themes that are important to understand long term conditions and long term care. These themes are; self care/self support and supported care management. Self care/ self support involves persons with long term conditions managing their own care plans without much help from others for instance nurses and other professionals. This concept is known as â€Å"expert patient† and it is based on the premise that the person with the condition or disease understands it better than health care professionals. These patients have more knowledge about their conditions and have therefore learned ways of managing them. The patients undertake programs which provide information, resources and ways of developing relationships with healthcare bodies. This approach has demonstrated benefits for patients because they possess more knowledge of their conditions, ensures participation in decision making and get involved in the symptoms management processes. Although the concept of â€Å"expert patient† has its advantages, we must always be mindful of leaving some patients feeling abandoned and neglected when they are not able to manage skills and information they have been provided with. It is therefore advisable for patients to enroll in the supported care where nurses and other professionals are able to take care of both their personal and health needs. This is the reason that there must be a partnership with the patients, nurses and other professionals. The second half of the twentieth century brought a realization that due to the increase in numbers of people living with long term conditions (LTC), health care needed to be improved with an emphasis on patients being empowered to become decision makers in their care (Margerson, 2010). In the case scenario of Angela, the study concludes that she should focus more on supported care management where professionals with vast knowledge will assist

Management and Leadership (Coursework - Report) Essay

Management and Leadership (Coursework - Report) - Essay Example An institution’s success largely depends on how decisions are made and the structure that govern employee relationship and customer service (Simon 2006, pp.44). The company has maintains high standards by employing a very capable management team. They include the Chairman of the chain, Bill Marriot; The Chief Executive Officer; Arne Sorenson; the President and Chief Operating officer, Hurve Humler and the Chief Financial Officer, Peter Cole (Ritz-Carlton 2010). The company however achieved its high position in global hospitality under the leadership of President Horst Schulze. Schulze introduced focus on both the data-driven and personal sides of hospitality. The hotel chain has accomplished a lot since its inception and is the only company in the world to have won the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards twice both in 1992 and 1998 (Bono & Heijden 2011, pp.221). It has placed in top positions in various notable hospitality surveys such as the Zagat Survey. Mis sion and Goals The motto of the Ritz-Carlton hotel is â€Å"Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen†. This motto describes the general operations of the company and defines its corporate strategy. Since its inception, the company’s goal has been to provide exemplary service to their consumers while ensuring that elegance and luxury is of high quality. The company is dedicated to ensuring that their consumers feel like loyalty from the moment the step through the doors till the moment they depart. Customer Relations According to Storey, Emberson and Reade (2005, pp.248), customer responsiveness largely depends on the management model used and can make or break a company. The Ritz-Carlton group has ensured that their customer service if exemplary and worthy to compete in the global hospitality market. The previous president Horst Schulze instituted certain quality service control that catapulted the hotel chain into the top. Apart from the three levels of servi ce employed to make guests feel welcome, employees in the company are given the authority to handle any complaints from customers on the spot and can spend $2000 in the process as necessitated (Bono & Heijden 2011, pp.223). The employees can also request immediate aid from other employees. Furthermore, the employees are also required to gain feedback from the customers within a twenty minute period on the progress of problem resolution. Analysis of the Corporate Strategy of the Ritz-Carlton Hofstede demonstrated that there are several dimensions of culture that determine the operations of a company. The dimensions define how a company interacts both with its employees and its consumers. The first dimension is whether a company is means oriented or goal oriented (Hofstede 1980, pp.74). The Ritz-Carlton company is goal oriented such that the structure commencing from its credo to internal operations are all geared to providing the exemplary customer service and maintaining the Ritz-Ca rlton mystique. The second dimension is whether a company is internal driven or externally driven (Bono & Heijden 2011, pp.212). In an internally driven company, employees perceive that honesty and business ethics are vital and that they better understand what the customer needs. In an externally driven system however, emphasis is on meeting the requirements and needs of the customer (Aaker 2007, pp.59). The Ritz is an externally dri

Essence of concept of integration to fair-mindedness Essay

Essence of concept of integration to fair-mindedness - Essay Example From the research it can be comprehended that, In spite of its significance, executing fair-mindedness sometimes presented enormous challenges to the employees: that is, the nature of intellectual approaches or practices that were supposed to recommend a new applicant for recruitment despite the lesser qualifications of candidates who had been on the waiting list for many years. Concept integration was a challenging task as to the ‘amount’ of each concept should be incorporated in an effort to execute fair-mindedness between applicants who had had immense experience but inferior training and those that were highly trained but had limited experience to show. In view of this, there are several philosophies on fair-mindedness that cast grievous misgivings on its essence as a rational virtue. Regardless, its essence is enticing to contemplate as basically in line with situations revolving around intellectual disagreement, resistance, challenge, or row, and essentially, to si tuations revolving around a disagreement between an individual’s morals, on opposing a position based on logical reasoning as to who should get the green light to join employment. Diestler suggests a fair-minded individual essentially moves beyond his or her own doxastic inclinations in order to offer a fair judgement to the logical opposition. This presented immense challenges to the management team of which I was part of, especially when decision-making was required. Although, fair-mindedness is an essential quality that the organization leadership attempted to uphold, tremendous pitfalls such as balancing the the employment opportunities between poor and rich neighbourhoods presented gaping pitfalls which the management had to tread carefully to maintain professionalism in the organizations who absorbed their workforce from our company; and proper balancing of employment opportunities across the country’s major socio-economic demographics. Fair-mindedness used to be quite involving: for instance, while a modification of the conflict of dealing with only the local employees and employers resulted in acceptable outcomes, especially among individuals who felt they were excluded from the exercise, the organization made it clear that in intended to include human resources from other countries as a strategy of expanding its operations globally within the next decade. While serving in the organization, concept integration manifested in the organizational leadership when different pressing issues relating to employment such as gender, race, qualification, disability, and employee experience was looked into from different perspectives. The recommendation of qualified candidates was based on the monetary loses or benefits that an issue could result in, such as taxation issues, bond issues, rent, and pension schemes. Additionally, the management team explored the long-term expenditures that organizations may

Communicating with Customers

Communicating with Customers COMMUNICATING WITH CUSTOMERS PO 3 Customer Service Message Photograph of an organisation/business exterior. Negative:   The front of this shop is not very inviting because the windows dont have much clothing/products in them, it does not tell the customer what they are selling.  Ã‚   In fact, you cant really tell whats being sold. The entrance is very dark. The upper story window is messy and disorganised. Recommendations I would recommend putting more lighting on the outside, at the entrance, plus more lighting on the windows, so the customer can see exactly what is for sale. Put mannequins on the bottom and top windows, showing the customer what clothing is on sale inside, and some of the other products they sell, e.g. curtains and childrens clothing. http://guineys.ie/ Customer Service Message Photograph of an organisation/business exterior Positive:   This photograph shows the Woodstock Hotel which is a beautiful hotel close to the centre of Ennis and yet has a country feel to it.  Ã‚   The entrance is warm and inviting, with lovely lighting and stained glass.   The cut stone gives this hotel character.   The entrance also caters for the disabled with wheelchair access. There are large flower pots that have evergreen shrubs planted, which breaks up the grey of the stone. http://www.hotelwoodstock.ie/ Customer Service Message A screen shot of an organisations website. Positive:   Guineys have a very good website, showing all the departments that you can browse through.   It shows you whats best value at the moment and weekly deals that are in store at present.   It tells you that they accept the One4all vouchers from An post.  Ã‚   The customer can phone in their order between certain times.   The customer can sign up for their newsletter and its all private.   This site is very user friendly. http://guineys.ie/ Customer Service Message A Screen shot of an organisations website Negative: I was looking to purchase a glass house in Ireland and came across this website. I felt frustrated trying to navigate around it as I could not find anything close to what I wanted, in fact they said they had certain sizes of glass houses but they were impossible to find on this page, which to me is false advertising. It also said there was a price list but there wasnt one.   There were very few pages of information compared to what the page said.   I rang the number on the page several times for help, but nobody answered. Recommendation:I would recommend they hire a web designer, it doesnt cost a lot, but it would bring in money to the company.   The company should then keep the website updated on a regular basis.   I would recommend then that the company hire a person to answer the phone at all times, again this would obviously make money for them, because I as a customer gave up wanting to buy anything because I couldnt speak to anyone in this company. http://www.polydome.ie/glasshouses_search.php?maincatid=3 Customer Service Message Printed Material from and Organisation (flyer, leaflet, brochure) Positive: The Irish Cancer Society is a wonderful organisation, who do a lot of work for people and their families suffering from cancer. Daffidol Day is held every year in March, this year its the 24the March, and the money raised goes to the County you are collecting in.   You can donate at any time online. This charitable organisation uses the money also for patients travel to and from hospital. Counselling services for patients and families. Information and services on Pallative care and end of life care. There is a freephone number, for people to contact a nurse for confidential advice and information. See Appendix A at the back https://www.cancer.ie/?gclid=CMKB1ua97NICFa-97QodHIUEcw https://www.cancer.ie/support/coping-with-cancer/palliative-care#sthash.xYq8CER1.dpbs Printed material from an Organisation Negative:   When you look at this flyer it doesnt jump out at me, to tell me what its exactly about, in fact there is very little information on it about the food/meals its serving.   The background is a dark colour and takes away from the writing underneath. Recommendations:   I would recommend that they would include visuals of what food they serve.   They should change the background colour, something brighter and the print then would contrast better against it.   The font actually should all be in bold. See Appendix B Customer Service Message News Report/Clipping regarding employment conditions, corporate ethics, environmental ethics, sponsorship, etc. Positive:   Aldi have a great initiative in tackling food waste, by distributing left over food from the shops, to families who are in need and charitable organisations like St. Vincents de Paul who look after poor people, for example those living on the streets and in shelter in the cities. https://www.aldi.ie/love-ireland Customer Service Message News report/clipping regarding employment conditions, corporate ethics, environmental ethics, sponsorship, etc. Negative:   Tesco are in an ongoing battle with about 3,000 of their employees over their pre-1996 contracts for work.   Tesco wants these employees to take lower rates of pay and conditions, just like their new employees.   During the strike periods Tesco stores all over Ireland have lost millions of euros, because customers did not want to pass the picket line.   At the moment a mediator has been appointed to try to come to some agreement with both parties over this row. Recommendations:   I would recommend Tesco come up with a fair package for all their employeesas they work hard and have long hours of work.   This country is doing well again and these companies are making plenty of money, so why not give a fair package like Lidl and Aldi who have set a precedent here. See Appendix C at the back.
